What do I wanna be when I grow old…?

I have puzzled over this question for far too many hours, days, weeks maybe even years. Sometimes I think it is a travesty that we are made to think about this seriously at such a young age, which I guess is around the start of yr 11 (for most Australian students… I believe at least). It’s a travesty because we get locked into the path that leads us towards that career choice via VCE subjects that lead to a specific University course, and then specific units within that, which leads to picking a major or two and a minor or two or more! And then their could be additional diplomas, certificates, post-grad courses like Masters or PhD’s. And if you get halfway down your path and realise you don’t actually like what you are doing, or can’t get into the field of work you want, you have to start a new path. Years of education, money and youth down the drain, for nothing but a piece of paper.

According to health trends my generation could live to a 100 or more, so you’d think you have heaps of time to go back, sort out your life, get what education you need for your new path, but every year we spend studying is a year that we cannot be active in the work-force and earning decent money. This is a huge issue to me as everyone (news, family, friends, governement) seems to be forever discussing how impossible it is going to be for my generation to own a house, and renting can be difficult enough when you have a full time job, but if you are studying full time, how on earth are we expected to ever be able to even move out of our parents home?! Honestly.

Another thing that is related to careers and university, I can’t believe how little information I have been able to ascertain on what jobs I could be qualified for depending on my degree, and majors and minors. The amount of sleepless nights I have had, freaking out because the career I could visualise myself doing needs something completely unrelated to my degree, and then later I find out that actually I’m fine and what I am studying can get me there. I wish there was just a SUPER comprehensive website/book/whatever that explained all jobs and what qualifications are necessary. Nothing would be contradictory in that book/website/whatever, unlike the freaking world.

I wish life was easier, sometimes.

ps. My body hates me so much I have to go get a freaking MRi next month. Pretty much I don’t wanna have it because it looks a tad scary but I wanna know what’s going on…

Oh so tired.

Well, today is the third day back at uni and I feel like I haven’t slept for a week despite getting at least 7 hours sleep a night! What the hell is going on? Maybe I’m deficient in some vitamin or mineral or something lame like that.

But yes, so I am sitting in the library, my eyelids drooping, waiting for my first lecture of the day to roll around. Pretty boring but at least it is quiet. So far all my subjects have been pretty freaking good. Microbiology and Zoology are definitely my early favourites, both have decent lecturers but great lecture content so YAY! Molecular Biology looks like it’ll be pretty tedious, especially in the labs as they seem to be slightly obsessed with flow charts. Like weirdly obsessed. I haven’t had a Developmental Biology lecture yet due to a stupid clash between it and my Micro lab. Clashes suck giant balls.

It doesn’t feel any different being a second year uni student, except there is less confusion about where all my lecture theaters and labs are.

Nothing much has really been happening other than uni and work and I have a feeling that it will consume my life but I guess that’s what you have to expect when you have uni every day. Having 23 contact hours epically sucks. I envy Art students who only have around 10 contact hours. Jerks.

Well that’s all for now because honestly it is far to early to be thinking. My mind is mush.

Exciting days.

About a week ago Saska called me to say that at the end of the year he will be going to Europe and that I should come to. So pretty much we are now going to Europe, it was that easy. I honestly cannot express how excited I am by the prospect of spending winter somewhere it will actually snow! And I’ll technically get to have 2 winters, one in Australia and one in Europe. How fabulous!!!!!!!

We are planning on leaving Australia around the 8th of December and then leave Europe on the 9th of January. So not only will I be spending my first Christmas away from my family, but also my 20th birthday! A bit scary but still exciting. Saska and I have gotten a little bit crazy from the prospect of our trip and having maniacally started planning everything and making budgets on spreadsheets. We’ve also started a travel journal for the lead up to the trip and then the actual trip. We are a bit obsessed.

We are planning on staying in Paris, Rome, Berlin, England (Reading (With Saska’s good friend Ben Nunney) and Buckingham (with Saska family))  and then Finland (Riihimaki (with Saska’s Grandpa) which is 70km outside of Helsinki). And we’ll make day trips to other places like Bath and Venice. I wanna see the Stonehenge like rawr.
So yeah. I’m pretty excited. It’s going to be a bit hard saving up all the money but I’ll get there! Especially since I will get a bit of money as early Christmas and Birthday presents from family members.  SQUEE.

Nothing really thrilling other than this has happened lately I think. So there isn’t much else to say.

The cold cold summer.

Melbourne’s weather is utterly confusing and ridiculously unpredictable. We’ve had a 40 degree day followed by a few in the 30’s and then all of a sudden is raining and cold. I think some mood stabilizers are in order so the atmosphere.

Well my birthday came and went with minimal excitement apart from spending a nice evening with some friends and getting a pretty spiffy present of an XBOX360. Lately I’ve been a bit addicted to videogames lately, especially Pokemon. I never got a gameboy as a kid, just a N64 to play Yoshi on! So I bought Pokemon Diamond for my DS and I can’t stop playing it.

I have also become especially involved in watching Dexter. I know I am very behind the times with that but gosh it is such a good show! I feel sorry for Saska though because I anticipated everything in the first season before it was said. I have a bad habit of doing that in movies and such. “Is he going to die next?” “I bet he is really his brother” etc. I must drive the poor boy insane.

I kind of forced myself to blog today since I really want to keep this one afloat for more than a few posts but I am already struggling. Ever since I have started uni I appear to have lost my creative streak completely. I don’t draw or write anymore. It’s kind of sad but I am still pursuing something I am passionate about which makes me happy. I’m look forward to going back to uni because my subjects are pretty rockin’. I’m especially looking forward to microbiology ^-^ YAY!

Well I guess this has been a pretty lousy post but I’m sure you’ll forgive until I get back into the swing of things.

Much love.

Another year gone.

As we rapidly approach 2010 I feel slightly sentimental on the year that has past. My first year of university has been great apart from a few bits and pieces. In my previous blogs I would have spent the whole post discussing them but honestly I am too lazy right now since it is about 32 degrees outside, which for me is WAY too hot. I can’t wait to move somewhere with cooler weather, and snow, because snow is rad! So yes, right now my fan is being noisy, my rats are snoozing in their adorable manner and I am trying to distract myself from the annoying mystery pain in my arm. Grumble.

I thought I’d tell you about a few awesome new/discovered things that have happened in this past year.

Regina Spektor’s new album ‘Far’.

Honestly, I LOVE this album. Spektor just has this voice, superbly trained, that is just delicious. She has given us a brilliantly diverse album with some more of her pop-ish songs such as ‘Folding Chair’ with clever catchy lyrics that stick in your head for long periods of time, to some more serious songs with lyrics that make you want to sit and ponder them. I am a huge fan of  ‘Blue Lips’ and ‘Eet’, just ’cause. ^-^ I’m not really one to critique and talk about the whole album, I just like it.

Rats.

Gosh I love my babies. Unfortunately the one I got at the very beginning of the year, Lilly, only had a short life as she got pneumonia. But now I have two other ones, Panda-Bear, who is just over a year old now, and Soda-pop who is just a little munchkin (about 3 months old). They are SO adorably cute. Soda is very inquisitive and loves hands for some reason, and Panda is a cuddle-monster if you can get her to wake up. They both eat like maniacs.

Cardigans.

What more can I say, they are comfy and easy to wear with whatever you are originally wearing most of the time. <3

Kids shoes.

I have been blessed with small feet. A few months ago I got a pair of these good-looking Volley’s, they were $10 cheaper than normal because they were for small boys. I win.

Double beds.

Are sooooo much more superior than single beds. Having slept on a single bed until I was 18, this year has been magical. Not only is my new mattress epically firm (I like them firm) there is so much more space, and most importantly, so much more doona!!!!! And also it means Saska can crash at my house and actually sleep in my room :P

Air-conditioning.

We just got one installed in the rumpus room, about two weeks ago. It’s been good on the hot days, but surprisingly there haven’t been that many. I have a feeling January will be a scorcher. Not fun at all.

Earning Money.

This has been my first year with a proper job. Honestly, I don’t really like it 100% (I work at Maccas…) but I mean we can’t always have what we want. It’s been sooooooo much easier this year with my own income, I’ve been able to by a new phone, a new battery for my laptop, an LCD screen to attach to my laptop to watch movies, and buy alcohol for parties. It’s pretty rockin’.

Well this is all for now. Hopefully this blog will stay afloat for at least a little while longer than my previous one.

Ciao for now.
